Charley's Story: A Family’s Journey with Epilepsy
This holiday season, we’d like to share the story of Charley and her family. Charley’s husband, Harrison, was the love of her life and a devoted father to their two sons. Harrison was a loving goofball, always making his family laugh and putting a smile on their faces. He had a warmth that brightened every room, and for Charley and the boys, he was everything.
Harrison was diagnosed with epilepsy as a teenager, and together they faced the struggles of managing his condition. “Having a loved one with epilepsy is a labour of love,” Charley says. They spent countless hours adjusting medication, understanding triggers, and enduring the exhaustion that came with each seizure. Harrison battled epilepsy with a strength Charley admired, but ultimately, his body could not keep fighting.
After Harrison’s passing, Charley learned about SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) and has since dedicated herself to raising awareness. “I’ve wondered countless times if things would have been different if we had known about SUDEP earlier,” she says. Through Epilepsy ACT, Charley has found a way to turn her grief into purpose, helping others understand epilepsy, the risks, and the support available.
“Christmas hasn’t been the same since losing Harrison. There’s a piece missing,” Charley says, but with Epilepsy ACT’s support, she has found hope and the strength to carry on Harrison’s memory.
